Company History

1953 RTSC and Gollin (N.Z.) Ltd was initially incorporated in New Zealand, representing the interests of British steel trader RTSC Exports Ltd and Australasian steel distributor Gollin & Co.   1956 British steel companies RTSC and Baldwins Steel joined forces, and subsequently took over Gollin & Co’s shareholding. Our company name was then changed to Richard Thomas & Baldwins (N.Z.) Ltd.   1967 The ‘Iron and Steel Act’ brought into public ownership 90% of British Steelmaking. British Steel Corporation (BSC) was formed from the UK's 14 main steel producing companies. As a result our company name was changed to British Steel Corporation (New Zealand) Ltd.   1988 The 1980’s had seen national steel strikes, mill closures, and major cost & productivity improvements. The heavy losses of a few years before were replaced by significant pre-tax profits. This resulted in the UK Government privatising the British Steel Corporation. Our company name was then changed to British Steel (New Zealand) Ltd.   1999 As a result of the merger between British Steel and Dutch steel and aluminium producer Koninklijke Hoogovens, the new multi metals company Corus was formed. Our company name was changed to Corus New Zealand Ltd, with the stainless steel division trading as Corus Metals.
