Outokumpu receives 2000
tonne order for Hong Kong bridge project.
Outokumpu
Stainless Hot Rolled Plate has received a major order from Hong
Kong for stainless steel that will be produced at its production
facilities in Degerfors, Sweden. The order is for a total of 2000
tons of stainless steel individually hot rolled plate and its estimated
value is around SEK 90 million.
The stainless steel will be used in the production of the Stonecutters
Bridge in Hong Kong, to clad its two pole towers, or pylons, with
a special stainless steel skin. The pylons will reach a height of
300 meters, and the use of a stainless steel skin for the top 120
meters will improve their strength and stability.
Upon completion, the bridge will be one of the longest single span
cable-stayed bridges in the world, with a span of around one kilometer,
making it a major new landmark for Hong Kong.
-“There were two main reasons for choosing stainless steel.
Firstly, stainless steel is maintenance-free, which is a considerable
advantage given the height of the pylons. Secondly, the excellent
mechanical properties of high-strength duplex steel are well suited
for achieving the desired stability of the bridge towers.”
“Even in historical terms, this is one of the largest individual
orders ever received by Hot Rolled Plate,” says Jan Eriksson,
General Manager, Marketing & Sales. As well as being important
in terms of its size and value, the order exemplifies perfectly
the market profile that Hot Rolled Plate in Degerfors is seeking
to establish in the global market. Market growth in Asia is one
of the highest in the world and, as befits a world leader, Outokumpu
Stainless Hot Rolled Plate has sought to make its presence known
in the region through successful customer cooperation and by offering
a full range of added-value services.
Additional deliveries of stainless steel tubes will be made by
Outokumpu Stainless Tubular Products in Storfors, which will source
its feedstock from Hot Rolled Plate in Degerfors.
“The stainless steel plates will be delivered with a special
surface finish. The high quality surface finish will improve corrosion
resistance and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the structure,”
says Anders Finnås, the man responsible for developing new
applications for the Hot Rolled Plate business.
Following extensive testing by Ove Arup & Partners and Ancon
in the UK to establish the suitability of stainless steel for the
design, a duplex grade was chosen for its excellent combination
of high strength and corrosion resistance.
The bridge will need to be able to withstand very harsh environmental
conditions, including high atmospheric humidity with high salinity
and a severe climate, with high winds that often reach hurricane
force.
