Specialised stainless steel finishes for Auckland
International Airport’s award winning construction projects

With Rugby World Cup 2011 looming and the arrival of the new “Super jumbo” Airbus A-380, Auckland International Airport has been expanding their capacity and ability to provide world class service to international travellers.

Tata Steel New Zealand supplied Canvas” pattern, embossed stainless steel for applications such as:

  • Travelator trims
  • Drinking fountain splashbacks
  • Wall corner guards
  • Skirting
  • Column cladding protection

Tata Steel was able provide sub-contractors with sheets cut to custom lengths to ensure waste material was kept to a minimum. Click here for more details on our specialist architectural metal finishes.

In designing the Pier B and Passenger Arrival expansion projects, architects and designers from Stephenson & Turner and Adrian Nancekivell Design, along with consulting engineers Beca have achieved a world class gateway to New Zealand. Their efforts have been rewarded with an Excellence Award in 2009 from the Property Council of New Zealand in the Special Purpose building category.

A modern easily maintained textured surface finish (Canvas) was chosen, with superior resistance to general wear and tear. This finish will reduce glare despite having a smooth polished surface, and will continue to look great for years to come. Significant long term savings will be achieved by reducing the need for costly replacements.

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, with a typical recycled content of over 60%. This high level of recycled content has no adverse effect on mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, or hygiene performance. Stainless steel is inherently fire resistant, and will not give off toxic fumes in a fire.
